Public Internet Access Computer Use
Policy:
Computer Users Guide
Anyone with a valid Livonia Public Library card may use the
Public Internet Access Computers and CD-ROM databases. Users will
be required to sign a computer user agreement form.
Parents/legal guardians are required to sign a permission waiver
for minors who wish to use the library's Internet connection and are
encouraged to supervise their children's Internet sessions. Children
under the age of 8 must be accompanied by an adult who sits with
them at all times. Parents are responsible for any damage done to
library equipment or materials while their children are using the
computer.
Users of all ages will be held responsible for any damage or
alteration to equipment, or failure to follow any of guidelines
below .
Users checkout out the computer as in checking out any other
library materials before using the computers. Patrons may use the
computers for Internet use, research on electronic or CD–ROM
databases, word processing, and e-mail.
Adult users may request the staff to unfilter computers to
conduct legitimate research for a period of 30 minutes. Use of the
computers is limited to one hour per session. The number of
sessions per week may be limited if future policy dictates.
Sessions may be terminated at the discretion of the staff for
unacceptable uses of this service. “Unacceptable uses“ of the
computer may include but are not limited to:

Gaining unauthorized access to resources |

Disruptive behavior at the computer |

Vandalizing or disrupting equipment, software or system
performance |

Using the computer for illegal or criminal purpose, including
hacking, fraud, or spreading slander or libel |

Unauthorized
disclosure, use, and dissemination of personal identification
information regarding minors |

Downloading software
or files to library computers |
 |
Using personal
software /computer accessories/cell phones on library
computers |
 |
Playing games on
library computers |
 |
Using computers for
chat room activities |
 |
Displaying,
downloading, storing or printing files or messages that are
illegal, obscene, or inappropriate in a public setting |
No one may use the computers after 8:15 p.m. weekday evenings or
2:45p.m on Saturday.
Please do not leave your work on hard drive. We reserve the
right to remove any files left behind. Files may be downloaded to
diskettes or printed to designated printers. Patrons who download
files are responsible for verifying that they are free of computer
viruses to protect their own computers.
Library staff will assist library patrons with searches and
suggest search strategies, but can provide only limited assistance
in teaching patrons how to use the Internet and only will provide
assistance when time and sufficient staffing allows. The library
will occasionally offer short introductory classes to familiarize
patrons with the basics of Internet searching. Other resources are
also available for teaching use of Internet to patrons.
Services not available on the Internet include games, newsgroups
or listserves, chat rooms.
